    Equitable family engagement will embrace diversity, identify and break down systemic barriers, act as a bridge between the school and families, have a positive impact on student achievement and behavior. Family Engagement will empower families to know how to support their child's education, and for schools to learn from the expertise families have about their child. Academic and whole child success is dependent on family engagement.

    • Resources for Virginia Schools for Fostering Parent Involvement (VDOE) A list of resources provided by the Virginia Department of Education and the Center for Family Involvement at the Partnership for People with Disabilities at Virginia Commonwealth University.
    • Tips and Strategies for Increasing Parent and Family Involvement in Virginia Schools (VDOE) Parents are vital partners in their child's education and life success. In 2009, a VDOE stakeholder group on parent involvement in public schools disseminated a questionnaire to over 1000 parents, teachers and school administrators across Virginia. Recipients were asked to share strategies schools have used successfully to partner with parents and families to improve student outcomes. Over 450 recipients responded, providing the tips and strategies in this booklet. Readers are encouraged to browse these tips and commit to trying several new strategies to support the involvement of parents and families in the education of their children.

    • Best practices in engaging diverse families This brief provides a synthesis of research and case studies on engaging diverse families, especially engaging African-American and Hispanic families in large, urban public school districts.
    • Partners in education: A dual capacity-building framework for family–school partnerships This resource, which was collaboratively developed by the U.S. Department of Education and SEDL, outlines a framework for family engagement initiatives that can build capacity among educators and families and support partnerships for student success. This resource is designed to help scaffold for the development of family engagement strategies, policies, and programs.

    • Strategies for Community Engagement in School Turnaround This resource from the Reform Support Network summarizes the key lessons learned and takeaways from the family and community engagement efforts of eleven states and districts across the country in 2013
    • Partnering with Families and Communities published in the Educational Leadership journal, outlines how school leaders can support the development of a school learning community that includes parents and family members. This resource provides many examples from the field organized by different types of engagement strategies.

    • Principals-Engaging All Families in Student Learning self-paced guide for principals to use to gain a deeper understanding of what can be done to increase equity and access for families in the formative assessment process.
    • Teachers-Families' Strengths-PowerPoint Presentation a self-paced guide for teachers to use for deepening their knowledge and understanding of each family's culture. This resource ultimately supports teachers building relationships with families during the formative assessment process, leading to more equitable teaching practices.
